The Historic Wurlitzer Building’s Revitalization

On the outer edge of North Tonawanda, New York, the Wurlitzer Building stands as a testament to both architectural splendor and industrial history. Originally constructed in 1892 by the North Tonawanda Barrel Factory. It wasn’t until 1908 that this beautiful building and company was taken over by the Rudolf Wurlitzer Manufacturing Company. Wurlitzer has always been famed for its musical instruments and the building quickly became an icon of American manufacturing prowess. Over the decades, it witnessed the evolution of industry and technology, mirroring the ebbs and flows of economic change.

However, like many relics of the industrial era, the Wurlitzer Building faced challenges in the latter part of the 20th century, falling into disuse and disrepair. Yet, its sturdy brick façade and rich heritage endured, capturing the imagination of preservationists and entrepreneurs alike.

Today, the Wurlitzer Building is experiencing a remarkable resurgence. At Platter’s Chocolate Factory, we are proud that our move to the Wurlitzer Building has sparked the revitalization efforts and has breathed new life into this historic landmark, transforming it into a hub of commerce where folks can gather.

Former factory floors, once filled with the hum of machinery, now buzz with the voices and laughter found in many retail and restaurant establishments. Some of those include:

The adaptive reuse of the space has preserved its architectural integrity while catering to modern business needs. Local businesses have eagerly embraced the opportunity to set up shop in the Wurlitzer Building, drawn by its unique charm and historical significance.

From boutique retailers to events venues and specialty coffee & ice cream café and chocolate shop, each new tenant contributes to a vibrant ecosystem that honors the building's legacy while paving the way for its future.

FUN FACT: At one time the Rudolf Wurlitzer Manufacturing Company manufactured over 45,000 jukebox units a year. Today Platter’s Chocolate Factory manufactures over 45,000 pounds of sponge candy a year!

Beyond its economic impact, the Wurlitzer Building stands as a beacon of community pride and renewal. Residents and tourists from all over the world visit daily, drawn not only by the allure of its businesses but also by the chance to connect with a piece of North Tonawanda's history.

As the Wurlitzer Building continues to evolve, it serves as a reminder that preserving history and fostering innovation can go hand in hand. Its story is a testament to the resilience of historic structures and the enduring spirit of revitalization that defines North Tonawanda today.
